ECSU Blocks My Unemployment After Firing Me…Compounding My Trauma

On September 19, 2025, the day after I was fired from ECSU via Criminal Trespass Warning, I applied for unemployment benefits.

On September 29, 2025, ECSU Human Resources confirmed that I was “actively employed” to the Connecticut Department of Labor. HR followed up with me twice after this to see if I truly filed the unemployment claim: once on September 30, and once on October 1.

If I was given a Criminal Trespass Warning, that means I was fired!

After my tuition refund funds ran out, I was unable to obtain a hotel or motel, and am now sleeping in my car. Staying in a shelter will only exacerbate my trauma. When I tried explaining this to Dr. Alphonso Atkins, Connecticut State Colleges & Universities’ Executive Director of Civil Rights Compliance, he laughed at me and told me that there was nothing the system could do for me since I am no longer part of it.

While I await an appeal to obtain my Unemployment benefits, I would greatly appreciate any financial support you can offer – if you are unable to support me financially, I would really appreciate it if you could spread the word about my story. As they say, word-of-mouth is one of the best ways to spread news!

Wishing you all a joyous and jolly holiday season!
